Duncan Crosson

Fractional CEO & COO

Senior leadership when the business needs it, without adding another permanent executive.

When a business has outgrown its leadership, Duncan steps into the business as a part-time chief executive or chief operating officer. He takes the chair, gets the operation working and stays accountable for the result.

30+ years of executive leadership across listed groups, franchise networks and founder-led businesses.

When businesses bring Duncan in

Most of Duncan's work starts in one of four situations.

  • Growth across several sites, brands or channels at once

The concept works and demand is there, but the operating model has not kept pace with the number of stores, brands or channels running at the same time.

  • A turnaround or a crisis

The business is under pressure and needs stabilising quickly, while protecting people, liquidity and the core of what makes it work.

  • A capital raise, listing or stronger board

A founder-led or growth-stage business preparing for a JSE listing, private equity investment or a step up in governance.

  • Moving a store-based business online

A traditional retailer that needs omnichannel and e-commerce capability built inside the business rather than bolted on.

Who he works with

Startups and early-stage ventures
Traction is real and the next stage needs senior oversight that the budget cannot yet carry full-time.
Growth-stage companies
The model is proven and growth is adding complexity faster than structure.
Established businesses
A leadership gap, a strategic pivot or a performance problem that needs someone credible from day one.
Boards and investors
Portfolio or investee companies that need governance, accountability and executive capacity quickly.

How engagements work

A short, structured start to agree the scope, followed by one of three ways of working.

  1. Discovery call

  2. Diagnostic

  3. Engagement design

A clear proposal covering scope, time commitment, deliverables and fees, built around the situation and the budget.

  4. Integration

Duncan joins the business at the right level and works alongside the team on clarity, accountability and results.

About Duncan

Duncan Crosson is a Fractional CEO and COO based in Durban, South Africa. A finance-trained operator and former group CEO of a JSE-listed retailer, he works with founders, boards and investors in retail, franchising, FMCG and consumer businesses.

His career sits where entrepreneurship meets listed-company governance. He co-founded Scooters Pizza and Pet Care Distributors, serving as Financial Director of both, and was Chief Financial Officer of Taste Holdings, a food and jewellery group with several brands. He went on to lead Luxe Holdings as Group CEO, with NWJ, Arthur Kaplan and World's Finest Watches in the portfolio.

Because he trained in finance, he reads the numbers in every business himself rather than relying on someone else's view of them. That habit shapes how he starts: every engagement begins by finding out what is actually broken.

He now works fractionally with founders who have proven their concept but lack the operating infrastructure to scale, and with investor-led boards that need an experienced operator inside a portfolio company. He works at board and executive committee level.

Alongside this work he is co-founding SaxoMall, a live-streaming commerce venture in concept development and seed fundraising, and Swoon Jewellery, a premium e-commerce brand.

Philosophy

I have built businesses from nothing and held them together when things got hard. The gap between a good idea and a great business is almost always execution and people.

Questions buyers ask

What founders and boards usually want to know before a first conversation.

What does a fractional CEO or COO do?

A fractional CEO or COO is a senior executive who leads a business part-time, for an agreed share of each month. Duncan takes on the full responsibilities of the role, running the leadership team and owning the outcomes, without the cost or long-term commitment of a full-time appointment.

The model suits businesses that need executive capability now but not a permanent hire at this stage.

How is a fractional executive different from a consultant?

A consultant diagnoses and recommends; a fractional executive owns and delivers. Duncan joins the leadership team, attends the meetings, makes the calls and answers for the results in the same way a permanent executive would. The difference from a permanent hire is structure and cost, not accountability.

There are no reports left sitting in a drawer.

Why not hire a full-time CEO or COO?

For many growth-stage businesses, a full-time executive at this level is more cost and commitment than the stage justifies. A fractional engagement brings the same calibre of leadership straight away, with no recruitment process, no notice period and no long-term commitment, and it can scale as the business changes.

Recruiting the right permanent executive takes months, and it takes more time again before they are fully effective.

How many days a month does an engagement take?

There is no minimum. The time commitment is agreed with each client and follows what the business needs, from a light monthly advisory role through to a full monthly commitment to a single business when the work calls for it. The structure is set upfront and reviewed regularly as the work develops.

Some engagements start lighter and build up. Others are intensive at the start and taper as the business finds its footing.

How is a fractional engagement priced?

Fees are agreed for each engagement and depend on its type, scope and time commitment. A fractional engagement costs a fraction of a permanent C-suite salary, and it is scoped so that the return can be measured against what the business needed to change.

Can someone part-time really understand my business?

Yes, and usually faster than a new full-time hire. Most businesses in difficulty face a familiar set of problems: cash pressure, a misaligned team, unclear strategy and growth running ahead of the infrastructure. Having met them across many businesses and sectors, Duncan recognises them quickly and knows where to start.

The context is always different. The underlying problems tend to repeat.

Does Duncan work outside Durban?

Yes. He takes on work throughout South Africa and abroad. Much of the work runs remotely, with time on site planned around the moments that matter most: leadership meetings, workshops, board sessions and key decisions. He is open to engagements that need regular travel to the client.

The split between remote work and time at the business is agreed as part of each proposal.
